A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[0:55] Once you have identified a role that you need to fill, the hiring process can seem daunting.
[2:45] “One-click” or “easy apply” applications are damaging for both the people hiring and the people looking to be hired. Candidates using these features tend to be passive and lazy.
[6:26] Including mini-tasks within the job description can help you to weed out applicants that are unable to read and follow your instructions.
[9:44] Setting up a separate email address just for role applications with an auto-responder can improve organization and make your life so much easier.
[13:03] Sometimes it is tempting to consider candidates that followed some but not all of the directions.
[15:51] Phone screening is an important step to help you find out more about potential candidates, why they are interested in this role, and if they are a good fit for you and your company.
[19:54] Screening questions tailored to the person’s role can give you a sense of how the candidate thinks and approaches things.
[24:27] Paid testing that is geared toward the role gives you further insight into the skill set and capabilities of potential candidates.
[30:28] Asking candidates to tell you how long they spent on the paid test can be a good indicator of whether this person is a good fit for the role.
[32:40] Asking situational questions in the final interview allows you to see the candidate’s thinking and how they would handle themselves within your company.
As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But, here are a few of the highlights:
“Anyone who is clicking easy apply and not doing anything else to even learn about you, your business, the role, what is actually required, what you’re looking for, that’s not the type of person you want to work with.” – Nicki
“You need an A player, and an A player cares enough about the role that they would read through everything in that job description and they would give you everything you’re looking for. And if they don’t do it, they’re not an A player.” – Nicki
“Of course you don’t want someone who just says ‘no I never fail’ or ‘I failed but it wasn’t my fault’ and puts the blame elsewhere. You want someone that takes ownership for what it is that they do and is open to learning, growing, and fixing the mistake.” – Kate
“Those situational questions really give you insight into how people truly act when things happen in the moment because so much of business happens in the moment.” – Nicki
