A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[0:00] Introduction: this episode is from an event—the Summer Freelance Summit—we host for one of our other Nicki K Media brands. But the concepts discussed are applicable to entrepreneurs and business owners of all kinds, so we wanted to bring you this session and all its valuable insights.

[03:40] The brain science behind procrastination is really important to understand. There are three different tools that you can add to your tool belt that you can pull from whenever you find yourself falling into that trap.

[08:16] It comes down to the way our brain is wired. At its heart, the reason we procrastinate is because our brain is feeling stress.

[11:55] Megan offers three different tools for beating procrastination. Some work better for avoiding productive procrastination versus the destructive procrastination. The first tool is learning how to take those scary or daunting tasks and actually break them down into much smaller, meaningful, less scary bite-sized chunks to get done.

[16:32] Sometimes we have those big, daunting tasks and there feels like there is no way to organize it. This is when you can try using time chunks. Ask yourself, “how much time am I willing to spend on this daunting task in one sitting to just get myself in motion?”

[26:30] Create a comprehensive time plan so you have your budget of time and you don’t continually think that you’re going to have more time than you actually do.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But, here are a few of the highlights:

Headshot of Megan Sumrell

“What happens when we’re in one of those situations where we don’t want [to do something], it feels too hard or scary, or we’re overwhelmed, instead we actually shift to something we want to do. Something that brings us joy. And this is going to look different for absolutely everybody.” – Megan

“I will just rapid-fire brainstorm everything that I could think of that would need to get done in order for this big project to get completed. And the key to this step number one is not stressing out about the order that you need to do it … Most people get stuck in overthinking this part—they think that [breaking down tasks] needs to be done in chronological order.” – Megan

“A task list of all the things that you want to get done is not a plan. All it is is a bunch of things to get done. The plan is what’s going to tell you how and when, and then remind you of your time budget to help you avoid procrastinating.” – Megan
